Art On Istanbul presents Erdal İnci’s “Urban Landscapes” exhibition from 7 May – 5 June. The exhibition features İnci’s new documentary-quality works, known for his GIF-based video pieces that explore movement, along with the data visualization work “Berlin Wall.”

Erdal İnci focuses on concepts of movement, space, and time, expanding his video works—which previously documented public performances—into architectural structures, particularly interior spaces. Utilizing photogrammetry, a three-dimensional imaging technology also used in scientific research, İnci proposes a new visual-documentary approach. In these works, he photographs the interior and exterior surfaces of buildings hundreds of times, converting the images into 3D digital models. By limiting his artistic interventions, he preserves the documentary quality of the works.

“Urban Landscapes” guides viewers from İnci’s home in Beyoğlu to small businesses in Karaköy’s Thursday Market, soon to undergo urban transformation, moving from the exterior of buildings into their interiors. Through this approach, İnci transcends the limits of photography and video, revealing the internal structures of buildings. The exhibition, which combines 3D animation videos and photographs, highlights cities, buildings, and workspaces, drawing attention to their rapid transformation while reflecting the artist’s process from form to content.

Included in the exhibition, “Berlin Wall” is a data-visualization animation showing the buildings and interiors of the city, as well as West Berlin’s entirety enclosed by the wall, transforming it into a conceptual island. Using computer simulation, İnci reconstructs 45,000 modular pieces of the wall according to technical specifications. Arranged vertically rather than horizontally, the work allows viewers to see the entire wall in a single frame, while its fractal structure reveals the iconic L-shaped concrete modules up close.

“Urban Landscapes” will be on view until Sunday, 5 June at Art On Istanbul’s Şişhane space.
