Art On Istanbul presents The Lightness of Material as part of its curatorial exhibition program, featuring works by Canan Dağdelen, Ahmet Elhan, Olgu Ülkenciler, Ahmet Çerkez, Ülgen Semerci, Burcu Erden, Uğur Daştan, Betina Hobeş, Onur Mansız, and Sevgi Aka. Held between 15 February and 21 March 2020, the exhibition explores how the artists approach the concept of “lightness” both mentally and materially.
In the context of the exhibition, lightness of material considers how the weight and proportion of an object are perceived. Artists examine lightness without any affirmation or negation, sometimes in its literal sense, sometimes from a contrary perspective, addressing the appearance of structure, form, and components. In the exhibition, the lightness of material may emerge through application techniques, highlight an image that emphasizes lightness, problematize the material itself, or be contrasted to underscore its effect.
